The Strip Crush Test

The Strip Crush Test

The paper’s characteristic ’compressive strength’ can be determined by the strip crush test with high accuracy. Because of the short test length of only 0.7 mm, the load-bearing fiber portion of the material is taken into consideration more than with the traditional testing methods (ring crush test, corrugated crush test or linear crush test). The Zwick test arrangement has unique characteristics compared to the normal horizontal machines.

  • Zwick uses a high-capacity load cell . This makes the measuring chain very stiff and  keeps post-test effects from the machine to the specimen a minimum.
  • Specimen and load cell lie in the same symmetrical axis. Erroneous bending moments are non-existent.

As resolution and accuracy of the Zwick measurement electronics are extremely high, paper can be measured accurately from approx. 100 g/m² to 400 g/m² and above. Because of its technical advantages, the Strip Crush Test is increasingly accepted worldwide.
Advantages:

  • an inexpensive accessory to be used with a Zwick machine
  • has the necessary stiffness for compression tests because of the high-capacity load cell
  • very little retroactive affect on the specimen due to the symmetrical design
  • easy-to-use user interface for quick monitoring of the test run

The Strip Crush Test is performed to ISO 9895 or TAPPI T 826.
